According to the Law department of the University of Iceland, the separation of powers is explained thus: "The Svartlyng family owns the courts, the Svartlyng family runs the government, and the Svartlyng family owns the congress."

SVARTLYNG tells the story of Mr. Hermann Svartlyng, a minister in an unspecified cabinet and his devious members of staff. When the shit hits the fan and the Svartlyng government is about to collapse, Hermann Svartlyng decides to hire a window cleaner- to show everyone that everything he touches is squeaky clean and that there is no corruption whatsoever in his office or in his cabinet.

For the past ten years scandal after scandal has shaken the political scene in this small society of Iceland and governments collapse like Domino pieces. First it was the financial crash in 2008, then the Panama papers in 2016, and in 2017 the fall of the Icelandic government, after the father of the then Prime minister Mr. Benediktsson was found out to have vouched for a convicted pedophile.

The revolution that lead to the 2017 government's collapse was under the hashtag #hofumhatt! - meaning: #Letsmakesomenoise! and it was led by GRAL's artistic director Bergur Thor and his wife Eva Vala - GRAL's set and costume designer. They were in the forefront of this fight for justice. It is from this farcelike situation of family ties, secrecy and corruption in the small Icelandic political scene that SVARTLYNG is inspired.

SVARTLYNG is GRAL's 5th show.
