Philosopher Spinoza once claimed, “No one has yet determined what the body can do”. We ask, what can the dancer do? Has anyone yet determined what the dancing body can do?
To dance is to wrestle with structure. Dancers are confined in physical and conceptual structures at every level – the political climate in which they perform, the funding organizations they are dependent on, the size and shape of their studios, the physical structure of their bodies, the conceptual body of dance as a form. How does the dancer move within these existing structures? Can the dancing body effect and change the choreographies created by existing structures within the institutions of dance? What can the dancing body do? During this roundtable, we will investigate these questions from within three interconnected bodies: the physical body, the institutional body, and the political body.
The roundtable is a part of EXPRESSIONS: The power and politics of expectations in dance, a project exploring expectations in dance through a research of theory and choreographic practice, led by Icelandic choreographer Steinunn Ketilsdóttir in collaboration with a team of international artists and scholars. It is hosted in collaboration with the Iceland Academy of the Arts where Steinunn is a research fellow currently in residence.
