Piece no. 1 by Steinunn Ketilsdóttir with original music by Áskell Harðarson

What makes a dance piece?
What do we expect it to be?
Or not to be?

Piece no. 1 is the first in a series of works – Pieces – by Icelandic choreographer Steinunn Ketilsdóttir. The work emerges from the choreographic research project EXPRESSIONS: the power and politics of expectations in dance which Steinunn has been leading for the past two years in conversation and collaboration with a body of international artists and scholars. Throughout its duration, research findings kaleidoscopically manifest themselves through performances, presentations and publications.

The project aims to be a catalyst for the generation of new knowledge in the field of dance exploring the potentialities of the art form outside of its expected manifestations. EXPRESSIONS operates as a spacemaker, rhizomatically opening up territories where critical engagement with the structural expectations of dance can be encountered. A space of exploration and analysis. A space which invites deep listening. A space where we can envision and practice the dance of tomorrow. Piece no. 1 will be Steinunn’s first experimentation in presenting discoveries from the research through the medium of the ensemble dance piece created for the stage. What to expect from Piece no. 1?

The Best of Darkness by Erna Ómarsdóttir and Valdimar Jóhannsson, with music by Sigur Rós and Valdimar Jóhannsson

Vulnerable humans! Embrace your shadows and weaknesses! Embrace the darkness!

The subjects of the kingdom of hungry ghosts are described as creatures with a thin neck, a small mouth, scrawny limbs, and big, bloated belly. This is the domain of addiction, with its eternal search for ready-made solutions to ease the infinite craving for satisfaction. But the ghosts cannot appease their hunger because they do not know what kind of nourishment they need. They struggle with unruly emptiness and are doomed to wander helplessly in their kingdom forever.

The first piece in the series At Dusk, We Embrace was premiered during winter solstice 2017, at Sigur Rós’ festival Norður og niður at Harpa concert hall. The video installation Life in the Undergrowth in collaboration with Pierre-Alain Giraud, premiered at the opening of the Winter Lights Festival in Reykjavík in February 2018 and was projected on two large oil tanks near the Marshall House. The third piece, Variations of darkness, was specially created for the bright space at the Reykjavik Art Museum and performed at Reykjavik Arts Festival in June 2018. The fourth and final work, The Best of Darkness, will premiere at Spectacular in November 2018 and will be created for theatre space.

All the work is performed to music by Sigur Rós and under the artistic direction of Erna Ómarsdóttir and Valdimar Jóhannsson, created in collaboration with IDC dancers.
