Shades of History appears before us as a strange kind of hypnotic stage magic. An illusory act of bodily disappearance, drenched in the desire to deceive. Katrín’s dancing body – with all its needs for rest and recovery – labours to render itself invisible behind the magic and illusion of a dance that hopes to never tire, but rather flow endlessly into evermore flowing flows.

Haunted by its past animations, Katrín's spasming body-memory provides Katrín with her dance material. Animated by a dance history of gestures and breaths that she has borrowed from other choreographers’ repertoires over the years and incorporated into her own work. At the heart of this illusion dance is a portrait of dance itself and it’s haunting urge to transcend the body of the dancer into pure uninterrupted bodiless flows of movement towards movement.

Shades of History was nominated for The Icelandic Performing Arts Award 2017 as "choreographer of year", "sound design of the year" and Katrín Gunnarsdóttir won the award as "dancer of the year". The work was also nominated for the DV Cultural Award 2016 in the dance category.

Katrín Gunnarsdóttir is a dancer and a choreographer based in Iceland. She studied dance at Iceland Academy of the Arts and choreography at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts (NL), graduating in 2008. She received a DanceWEB scholarship in 2007 at the Impulstanz festival in Vienna. Katrín is interested in resonance, rhythm and how labour intensive choreographies reveal the relationship between action and its affect. She has created Saving History (2014), Macho Man (2015), the award-winning Shades of History (2016), and a collaboration with the National Theatre of Iceland called KVIKA (2016). She has toured internationally with her own work since 2014. As a dancer and performer, Katrín has worked with Saga Sigurðardóttir, Erna Ómarsdóttir & Shalala and Kris Verdonck among others. She is also a member of the collective Marble Crowd. Katrín is currently developing her trio Crescendo (2018)
